Souvenirs

[Advanced]

Here's a song that can help bring up some memories, images of moments past. It's called In my life, by The Beattles:

It doesn't really help you to learn English if you simply listen to music, you have to read the words too, the lyrics. BTW, the word "lyrics" is always plural. Now, you'll notice that I've taken out some of the words from the second verse and left them blank. Can you fill in the blanks?

In My Life lyrics
(Lennon/McCartney)

There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

But of all these _______ and _______
There is no one compares with you
And these _______ lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose _______
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I _______ you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

Finally, I'd like you to write a short, or not so short paragraph about a memory you have of something that happened to you in the past. It can be a good or a bad memory. Remember to add as many details as possible. For example, where were you? When was it? Were you alone? What were you doing? etc. Just tell us your story as a comment!

A thing that i like to remember is my 15 birthday. it happened 2 years ago, in june.
it was winter and a very cold night, but i was so happy, all my friends and all my family was there with me, and everybody had a lot of fun. i received a lot of hugs, and my best friends said beatiful messages of happy birthday to me. it was unforgetable. that's it.

bye teacher, see you on friday!

  3. Hey, teacher!
Well, talking about good memories makes me remaind vacations. On my last one, I went to a beach, a very nice place in S. Catarina called Palmas. Not many peaple know it, what makes this beach even better. There, I slept a lot, just like I always do on vacations. After Palmas, me and my whole family (what means about 15 peaple, including grandparents, cousins, uncles, aunts)went to a ranch near Curitiba and spent a very good time there, with dogs, horses and all that nature things. But the nicest memory I will keep from this vacation is my approving in the vestibular (I don't know an english word for that), after a so exhaustible year.
    See you teacher,

  4. On my last vacation I went to Foz do Iguaçu. I had never been there before, and it is fantastic. We left Curitiba
after 11:00 pm and we traveled all over the night. Arriving there, we went straight to Paraguay to buy some toys. In fact,
if you go to Foz do Iguaçu, you go to Paraguay. On afternoon, we knew the biggest hydroelectric of the world, Itaipu.
In the next day, we went to the waterfalls, and it was the most beautiful sight I have ever seen, simply breathtaking.
Finally, we had lunch in Argentina, that is just some kilometers of Foz, and came back to home.

  5. On my last vacation, I went to São Paulo. I've already been there before, because a part of my family lives there. I'll probably go there again in July or December. In São Paulo, me and my friends went to the shopping, all that things that us, teeneagers do, you know. I've lived in São Paulo for 11 years and a half.

  6. On my last vacation I went to different places. I spent sometime at the beach, in Caiobá more precisely. I went to Rio Negro, where my family have a ranch, it was a very relaxing moment. And, finally, I've been in Porto Alegre to visit my father. It was a great moment, because Porto Alegre is a very nice city, with a lot of things to do.

  7. Hi, teacher!

Last January I was on vacation. Unfortunately, one of the two employees that works at my father's small stationery store was on vacation as well, so I had to work there the whole month. It's completely true that I'd already worked there before (always on vacations), but the fact is I haven't get used to it yet. In other words, it was really tedious. A lot of times I caught myself thinking of what else I would rather be doing than staying behind the counter and watching the cars passing by on the street. I wasted a lot of time trying to find a way to waste time, unsuccessfully. Occasionally, a customer entered the shop, but it wasn't often. Soon it was February, and the employee was back to work. Finally, I was free to do whatever I wanted to, so I took the only obvious course of action - I spent most of the last third of my vacation at home, doing almost nothing, like all the teenagers do. (Maybe the statement is not true, but most of my friends are teenagers and they did spend a lot of time at home doing nothing while they were on vacation)

    See you!

  8. On my last vacation I went to a beach called São Francisco do Sul in Santa Catarina. I had been there in January 2009, in fact, I always go there in the summer. I went this time with my parents and my sister and we enjoyed very much, because all the days were very hot and sunny. One day we went to Beto Carrero, but there we stood in huge lines to go to the rides. Other thing that I did this year(not on vacation anymore), was last week when I went to São Paulo just to see the Coldplay's concert. The stadium was crowded and it was the most incredible concert that I have ever seen.

  9. I must say that I'm really pleased with your comments. They really are writing samples, online! Above all, I'm happy that you've taken this opportunity to practice your English outside the classroom. Now, I'll try to book the multimedia room so we can enhance this and transform this into an interesting activity in the classroom as well.

    Cheers,

  10. On my last vacation I went to Balneário Camboriu in Santa Catarina. I've already been there before, actually I always go there in my summer vacations. Since I was a child my parents used to go there, so we always go. When i came back to Curitiba, I met a lot of new people in my building. My neighboors are friends of the boys who live at the building next to ours, so now everyday our playground is full of teenagers, what is actually really good. Almost every weekend I went to Shopping Curitiba or Shopping Palladium with my boyfriend and my friends. I had to went to the Afonso Pena's Aeroport, to say 'goodbye' to my boyfriend that went to Canada, so since he left I stayed at home playing Wii. My vacation was nice, and this year is going to be memorable!

  12. On my last vacation I went to Guaratuba beach in Paraná, with my family. We stayed there for two weeks. The apartment was too small and it rained a lot. The television could just show two channels and there was no internet, but it wasn't so bad, at least I had my computer and my games - we had a lot of fun although the circumstances.

On last July, I had - with my fianceè - a cultural and adventure interchange in two latin-american neighboring countries: Bolivia and Peru.

I stayed in Bolivia only two days, because of a peruvian revolt that has closed the roads at the frontier between the two countries (we had to leave Bolivia before the rebels has closed the frontier again). After that, I went to Peru, where I did the Inca Trail, a hard walking journey for 45km at 3.000km above the sea. I've never been an athletic person, then, when I was acheiving the higher peak of the mountain, I almost fainted! Besides
these inconveniences, it was an amazing experience!

    PS.: I love this song!

    Hi teacher;

When I was ten years, I went with my family for my grandfather's house on the beach. My grandmother had just "adopt" a dog that she found on the street. The dog went with us and on the second day ran away from home. My grandmother was worried and asked everybody to find it. Finally, we found the dog in the last day, in a house full of people! It was very funny.

On last vacation, my husband, my sons and I went to Maceió. We had never been there before. We spent a week visiting many places, especially beaches, but we took one day to visit part of the city on foot. On last years, we always go to Matinhos on January, this year it was not different, but after spent 20 days in Matinhos, where the weather was so bad, we had a really good time in Maceió.

  20. Hi, teacher!

Last January I went to Uruguay, on an event of my church called ELIM (Escuela de Lideranza y Missiones).I had never been outside the country before, it is wonderful to know new cultures!
I went with a friend from here, but there we met other people, from Curitiba and another states. Altogether we were 9 young people (5 girls and 4 guys)and stayed there for 3 weeks.
Almost all the time we were envolved with things by the event, but we had 4 days-long only to walk. We could know the whole city of Montevideo (parks, museums, casinos, beachs, etc..) and Punta del Este, that is really a fantastic city! I will never forget these days.

    See you,

  21. On my last vacation, in January, I went to Florianópolis at my godmother’s house. I always go there in the summer since she moved from Curitiba to there, and this was about 10 years ago. Me and my family went to the beach almost every day in about 10 days, and it was very good. Then we came back to Curitiba and on February 6th we had a wedding on Ivaiporã, that I think it’s near Cascavel. My cousin was the bride and she was very beautiful and happy. The most of my family went there by bus, but me, my parents and my brother went by car. We stayed there only for a weekend, but it was good to see all my family together again, what happens almost only at Christmas.
